Adding a wheel loader to your heavy equipment is a big investment, and that investment deserves your time and care. You’re not going to get incredible performance with a machine that isn’t well-maintained, so the longevity and functionality of your equipment depend on a little bit of know-how and elbow grease. But don’t worry, wheel loaders aren’t difficult to maintain. We want to make sure your machine is in tip-top shape, so read on for some tips on regular wheel loader maintenance.
Regular Inspection
The sooner you can spot potential problems, the easier and cheaper it will be to take care of them, so you’ll want to regularly inspect your wheel loader. Before the start of a workday, make sure the machine is up to the task with a quick inspection.
This might sound like a lot of work, but it’s definitely less work than you’ll have to do if your equipment suddenly breaks down. Examine the brakes and any hydraulic hoses to ensure there are no leaks or worn parts. This should also include checking to see that the corresponding fluids for these parts are topped off when needed.
Also, pay attention to your wheel loader tires. Use a tire pressure gauge to check the pressure levels and compare them with the recommended level mentioned in your owner’s manual. If one tire is wearing down, replace it. The tires should wear out more or less evenly so if one side seems to be wearing down faster, there’s a weight distribution or mechanical issue that needs to be fixed as soon as possible.
Fluids and Filters
Like any vehicle, your wheel loader relies on different fluids for proper functioning. Make sure you regularly replace oil and hydraulic fluid depending on the number of operating hours and top off your radiator fluid and fuel on a more daily basis. Gradual fluid loss is expected, but if there are extensive dips in fluid levels, it may indicate a leak. You’ll also want to replace your hydraulic fluid filter to ensure it doesn’t get clogged with dirt or impurities. Your gearbox oil will need to be changed for which your owner’s manual might give you more specifics.
