Uses and Applications of Skid Steers

Thanks to their zero-radius turns and compact profile, skid steer loaders are versatile pieces of equipment that allow you to get work done in cramped spaces on the construction site. You can also use these machines in the landscaping industry to get the job done right. If you are thinking about buying a skid steer loader, check out this beginner’s guide to the different classifications and uses to help you get your perfect model.

Operating Capacity

Skid steer loaders fall into one of three categories broken down by the model’s operating capacity. A compact frame measures under 1,750 pounds and offers less than 50 horsepower. A medium frame model will be between 1,750 and 2,200 pounds and between 50 and 70 horsepower. A large frame skid steer will be over 2,200 pounds and over 70 horsepower.

To choose the right size, consider your operating space. If you won’t be able to move the machine around at the work site, then there’s no point in buying a large skid steer. Also, think about the amount of power you’ll need. A bigger model will be more powerful and work efficiently, but you don’t want to pay for more power than you’ll end up using.

Uses for Skid Steer Loaders

Compact models are best for landscaping and property management, smaller demolition projects, transporting materials, building development, trenching, leveling, and post hole digging. Their smaller size makes them agile, which is especially helpful in tight spaces. Their lighter weight also means that they will cause less damage to the turf and be less harmful on delicate terrain.

Medium frame skid steers are excellent for construction and material management sites. They can tackle tasks like debris removal, transporting heavy material, minor grading and leveling, and preparing a site. As will need more space to move around, make sure your work site is spacious enough.

Large frame skid steers can handle the toughest job and the heaviest payload. They are mostly used for grading work, drilling and bigger demolition projects, and excavation. Their low profile is built to help them still move easily around work sites without their large size getting in the way. Use implements to manage even heavier hauling and dumping projects. These machines will cost more, but they will also be able to handle higher payloads.
